Lyle Tuttle, the world’s most iconic and cherished tattoo artist, at home, standing inside the doorway of Captain Don Leslie’s Gypsy Chuck Wagon. His legacy as an American pioneer and historian of all that is ’Tattoo’ will live on forever. A fiercely charismatic human, Lyle Tuttle was a maverick, an icon and a true friend to all. His spirit is sorely missed. Lyle’s body suit has been well documented over the past seventy years, much of his body being tattooed by the legendary Bert Grimm, including his whole torso. Other tattoos on Lyle by CJ Pop Eddy, Pat Martynuik, Ralph ‘Duke’ Kaufman, Al Miller, Ralph Johnstone, Jerry Pope, Amund Dietzel, Horiyoshi II, Himself and many others.

Bill Salmon was a visionary force in the tattoo community. Bill and his wife, Junko Shimada - Junii Salmon, inspired the tattoo community with their love for the tattoo arts and each other. Their tattoo studio in San Francisco, Diamond Club, has been a long time artist destination for creativity and inspiration. Bill’s imaginative mind knew no bounds, always engaged in youthful conversation and transcendent philosophy. Bill’s body suit was a testament to his inventive spirit, largely tattooed by Don Ed Hardy throughout the late 70’s and 80’s. A long history of innovative tattooists had embellished Bill’s flesh, including work from Junii Salmon, Ed Hardy, Filip Leu, Titine Leu, Greg Irons, Leo Zulueta, Jack Rudy, Guy Aitchison, Good Time Charlie Cartwright, Freddy Corbin, Freddy Negrete, Chuck Eldridge, Tin-Tin, Bob Roberts, Horitoshi 1, Horizakura, Horimitsu, Toshihide, Vyvyn Lazonga, Thom DeVita, Dan Thome, Lyle Tuttle, Horiyoshi 3, Pat Martynuik, Tsukasa Mouri, Andy Hinton, Chris Brand, Brian Kaneko, Yoni Zilber, Shad, Shige, Brian Everett, Loretta Leu, Roy Corona, Henry Goldfield, Dan Higgs, Mick from Zurich, S’ua Suluape Paulo, Bernie Luther, his Mom and Dad, and many more. The loose, colorful background in the painting is an homage to the psychedelic alien wizard, the late Mr. Bill Salmon.

Don Ed Hardy has done more than any artist in the history of tattooing to advance the craft and educate the masses on the power and relevance of the tattoo arts. I spent the day with Ed at his painting studio in San Francisco a couple of years ago, this painting is a reflection of that experience. The tattoos on Ed’s arms by Hong Kong Tom Yeomans, Pinky Yun, Horihide (Kazuo Ogiri), and Don Ed Hardy.

Bob Roberts first started professionally tattooing in 1973. An accomplished saxophonist, Bob played with Ruben and the Jets, Hot Tuna, the New York Dolls, and the Offs. His paintings have largely enjoyed an underground reputation as a living legend among the international body art community.
I spent the day at Bob Roberts’ World Famous Spotlight Tattoo on Melrose Ave, in Los Angeles. Bob allowed me the time and space to spend the day there and talk, take photos of him at work, and shoot for a portrait painting. I was there fo a fews hours soaking up the experience, but didn’t have an image that jumped out to me as something to represent this powerful force in the tattoo world. By the end of the day, I think Bob may have been over it. We took some photos of him with his dog, and then finally, he gave me this gesture that I think captures Bob’s attitude and strength.

Larger than life, Grime’s artistic contributions to tattooing, graffiti and the art world in general have been monumental. In this oversized portrait, I wanted to celebrate Grime’s impact through scale, but also explore the physical surface of the painting, utilizing layers of thick impasto paint to reflect Grime’s flesh, who himself suffered 3rd degree burns over the majority of his body as a child.
